La bolita/The marble by Cristina Baccin 2017 (Diptych, Panel 1)

“The Marble”

La bolita/The marble by Cristina Baccin 2017 (Diptych, Panel 2)
This work, ‘The Marble” is pare of the inequity series that uses objects from
everyday life to provoke questions about the social inequities that create inequality in our societies, especially those affecting the growth and opportunities for children to develop to their fullest capacities. In this series I have chosen to use diptychs that allow this work to illustrate both favorable and unfavorable circumstances.
I try to represent these social complexities using actions and objects common in everyday life. I this case I chose marbles which are fundamental to playing the game of marbles, one of the oldest games in the world.
In the panel with various marbles, the player with more marbles has accumulated more by “winning” them from others players. The panel with the single red marble represents the player who is “losing” and has only one chance left to continue playing. In societies with profound inequities “the game of life” depends on opportunities – or the marbles – that different social status individuals can bring into the game, especially in early childhood. Some have many “marbles” with a variety of colors providing greater chances of success. While others have few or only one marble that affords them a limited chance for a better life.
