PAINTINGS/pinturas

Artist Statement by Cristina Baccin

I paint based on my dreams and choose colors and shapes following the emotions that navigate my body.

The acrylic medium is my anchor; from there, I transform a surface with simple elements. I love the paint that exposes the rawness of the brush and the fingerprint of the fingers and body combined with the smoothness of the delicate stroke of a pencil, pastels, or charcoal.

Diptychs are my favorite creations because they open a dialogue with the viewer through contrasts and continuities. Still, they also expose an internal “conversation” between the artistic pieces, which the narrative hopes to be completed by the viewer’s imagination.

In my style, oneiric abstract and figurative representation converge. Perhaps it is a Latin American visual magical neo-realism rooted in my Italian cradle: I experience my creativity crossed by the culture of my ancestors uprooted from northern Italy and transported in my parents’ suitcases to the tragic Argentinean Patagonian territory.

In my visual projects, I represent the diasporas of my life: my physical migrations and the volatile sense of belonging that dies and is reborn in each movement.

My canvas is -essentially- my womanhood.
