Anna, age eight (English Edition)

This week, my Spanish translation of the book “Anna, age eight. The data-driven prevention of childhood trauma and maltreatment”by Katherine Ortega Courtney Ph.D. & Dominic Cappello was published. It was a work to which I devoted considerable effort and dedication, but especially compassion to accomplish. Child abuse is an arduous subject matter to write about requiring a deep sensitivity and a particular precision in the use of terms, even those that are innocuous.

My deepest gratitude goes to the authors of the work Katherine Ortega Courtney & Dominic Cappello and Anna, Age Eight Institute for having trusted me with their valuable tasks. In particular, I thank them for their commitment to writing this book that does not provide mere palliatives but attempts to address this social problem systemically. Furthermore, it is about involving the entire community with a direct call to action to end the epidemic of childhood abuse and maltreatment.

The authors used multiple writing styles to bring the text close to the general public in a direct and empathetic manner. They shared the subject from different narratives, such as their diaries of Anne’s story, to interpret statistics that are often hard for reading.

I sincerely appreciate the privilege of counting on the talent and experience of Dr. Enrique Lamadrid, Professor Emeritus of Spanish at the University of New Mexico, with whom working on the Spanish language translation was a playful and learning journey.

I express special gratitude to the Brindle Foundation for funding the translation and edition of this publication.

I hope that my humble contribution helps to end this epidemic afflicting our humanity.

Fue un trabajo al que dediqué mi mayor esfuerzo, dedicación pero especialmente compasión: el maltrato infantil es una temática ardua de escribir y requiere una profunda sensibilidad así como una particular precisión en el uso de términos, aún los que aparentemente son inocuos.

Deseo expresar mi más profundo agradecimiento a los autores de la obra Katherine Ortega Courtney & Dominic Cappello y al  Anna, Age Eight Institute  por haber confiado en mí una de sus obras más preciadas. En especial, agradezco su compromiso en la escritura de una obra cuyo objetivo no es brindar meros paliativos sino abordar la problemática sistémicamente e involucrando a la comunidad en su conjunto con un llamado directo a actuar para finalizar con la epidemia del maltrato y el abuso infantil.

También destaco los estilos que utilizaron los autores para acercar el texto al público en general con escritura sencilla, directa y empática, compartiendo el tema desde diferentes registros como sus propios diarios personales o la historia de Ana hasta la interpretación de  estadísticas que suelen ser áridas para la lectura.

Agradezco profundamente el privilegio de haber podido contar en la edición al español con el talento y la experiencia del Dr. Enrique Lamadrid, Profesor Emérito de Español de la University of New Mexico con quien trabajar sobre el idioma español fue un viaje de aprendizaje y de juego con el lenguaje.
