“Operacionalización de los determinantes sociales de la salud” de los autores Dra. K. Ortega Courtney & D. Cappello, traducido por Cristina Baccin

My Spanish translation of the book “Operacionalización de los determinantes sociales de la salud” written by Katherine Ortega Courtney Ph.D. & Dominic Cappello was published based on the English writing “Operationalizing the Social Determinants of Health. How to ensure the services for surviving and thriving in every community”. It was a work to which I devoted effort and dedication, but especially compassion to accomplish. 

The authors state that they “understand why systems designed to keep us safe have failed us, and are providing real-world solutions for meaningful, measurable, and lasting change. Courtney, Cappello, and their 100% Community Model are building a better world—one community at a time. Yours can be next. (…) Without positive social determinants—access to affordable, quality and timely family services—we endure adverse childhood experiences, trauma, substance use disorders, failing schools, unsafe communities and toxic workplaces. Without a local and state plan to ensure vital services for all, we perpetuate a generational cycle leading to abuse, neglect, hopelessness, injury, violence, illness, and fatalities.

(…) The frameworks included in this book support community-building, leadership development, policy work, and public and private sector partnerships. The result? A society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and we solve our most costly public health, safety, and education challenges. My deepest gratitude goes to the authors of the work Katherine Ortega Courtney & Dominic Cappello, Co-Directors of The 100% New Mexico initiative, a program of  Anna, Age Eight Institute, at New Mexico State University.

In particular, I thank them for their commitment to writing this book that does not provide mere palliatives but attempts to bring social “tools” to promotores comunitarios. Furthermore, it is about involving the entire community with a direct call to action to end the epidemic of childhood abuse and maltreatment with the aid of Artificial Intelligence.

The authors used multiple writing styles to bring the text close to the general public in a direct and empathetic manner. They shared the subject from different narratives, such as their diaries, to deal with institutional and administrative obstacles. 

I hope that my humble contribution helps to end this epidemic afflicting our humanity, and to help communities to organize themselves, especially Spanish speakers.

Mi traducción al español del libro “Operacionalización de los determinantes sociales de la salud” escrito por Katherine Ortega Courtney Ph.D. y Dominic Cappello fue recientemente publicado. Mi traducción se basa en el original en inglés “Operationalizing the Social Determinants of Health. How to ensure the services for surviving and thriving in every community”. 

Los autores “comprenden por qué sistemas diseñados para mantenernos a salvo nos han fallado y proporcionan soluciones del mundo real para un cambio significativo, medible y duradero. (…)

Sin determinantes sociales positivos -como el acceso a servicios familiares costeables, de calidad y oportunos-, padecemos experiencias adversas en la infancia, traumas, trastornos por consumo de sustancias psicoactivas, escuelas de bajo rendimiento, comunidades inseguras y lugares de trabajo tóxicos. Sin un plan local y estatal para garantizar servicios vitales para todos, perpetuamos un ciclo generacional que conduce al abuso, la negligencia, la desesperanza, las lesiones, la violencia, la enfermedad y las muertes.

En particular, les agradezco su compromiso con la escritura de este libro que no proporciona meros paliativos, sino que intenta brindar “herramientas” sociales a los promotores comunitarios. Además, trata de involucrar a toda la comunidad con un llamado directo a la acción para poner fin a la epidemia de abuso y maltrato infantil con el apoyo de Inteligencia Artificial. 

Los autores utilizaron múltiples estilos de escritura para acercar el texto al público en general de una manera directa y empática. Compartieron el tema desde diferentes narrativas, como sus diarios, para lidiar con obstáculos institucionales y administrativos.  

Espero que mi humilde contribución ayude a detener y prevenir esta epidemia de abuso y maltrato infantil que aflige a nuestra humanidad, y a ayudar a las comunidades a organizarse, especialmente a los hispanohablantes.
